GTECH to Provide Electronic Instant Lottery System to La Societe de la Loterie de la Suisse Romande
WEST GREENWICH, RI (July 8, 1998)
GTECH Holdings Corporation (NYSE:GTK), today announced that its wholly-owned operating subsidiary, GTECH Corporation, signed an agreement in April 1998, with La Societe de la Loterie de la Suisse Romande — the non-profit lottery company operating in the six French-speaking cantons in Switzerland — to provide 532 touch screen terminals, 263 validation management terminals (VMTs) and a central system for the operation of an electronic instant lottery game. It will be provided through GTECH’s gaming and entertainment subsidiary, Dreamport, Inc.
The system will be used to introduce a touch-screen play version of Loterie Romande’s instant games. The system is based on the same principles that are used for the traditional paper instant tickets: a centralized prize structure on the central machine distributes randomly the tickets to every terminal. This new way of virtual ticket distribution was authorized by the French-speaking cantons in March 1998.
The system will feature Dreamport licensed Video ProSys(TM) operating system, customized video terminals and a variety of games specifically designed for the Loterie Romande. The operating system will be integrated into the Loterie Romande’s on-line Keno(TM) system, which is part of the GTECH ProSys(TM) product line. The introduction of the electronic instant lottery game is an outgrowth of a successful pilot program undertaken by the Loterie Romande two years ago. The pilot demonstrated that by offering instant lottery games in an electronic format, design enhancements, such as animation and sound, add to the games’ popularity. The pilot program games were placed in social gathering places such as pubs, bars and restaurants.
The system will be sold and the related technology licensed to the Loterie Romande. The parties have also entered into a five-year service and maintenance contract.
